POLAR BEAR SWIM CLUB
GOALS 2009 - 2013

VICTORY IS NOT FOUND  ON THE PODIUM ....BUT WITHIN ONESELF.

Coaching goals:     retain the fun but increase the level of training.

Short term

  • Continue to have “fun” aspects of training but introduce this at fun events and minimize it during regular training
  • Have all coaches following the same goal plan in their training sets to support the transition from one group to another
  • Supplement the Learn to Swim Program with competitive elements of swimming
  • Improve the quality of coaching received in the  novice groups
  • Obtain a highly rated coach for frostbite swim camp
  • Encourage all competitive swimmers to travel to events held at 50 meter pool facilities.  This season –Kamloops where western Canada games will be held
  • Increase the number of “b”trialists at provincial level.  Get as many 15 /over swimmers to senior provincials as possible and maintain national qualifiers
  • Have seniors do “dryland”training  sessions  and be assessed annually
  • Introduce to the club: captains, log books, new cheers, and a mascot.  Generate a new sense of belonging within the entire club
  • Have swimmers formulate their own achievable goals...short/midterm/longterm

Midterm

  • Produce ”A “ qualifiers at u/14 level
  • Have a selection of 11/12 year old swimmers qualify for the Alberta North/South challenge
  • Develop Western Canada summer games qualifiers.  Look at cubs and up.  New qualifying standards to be set by NWT Swimming
  • Coordinate training sessions with Edmonton/Calgary based squads in their pools.  Either by way of a camp or staying later after a swim meet
  • Achieve more “A” finalists at senior  provincials, nationals and thus get invited to attend Alberta stroke camps

Longterm

  • Improve the level of swimming in the club. Have universities offer our kids tryouts
  • Have 90% of squads at Provincial level
  • Increase the number of national qualifiers to 10%
  • Have all  13 and up on a dry-land program
  • Have resources to take kids to a training camp in the summer offered by a university/or to an overseas meet
